17But suppose we seek to be made right with God through faith in Christ and then we are found guilty because we have abandoned the law. Would that mean Christ has led us into sin? Absolutely not! 18Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of the law I already tore down. 19For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law-I stopped trying to meet all its requirements-so that I might live for God. 20My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.
Paul is saying that the old laws are dead. They no longer say whether we are good people or not anymore, for we are all made good through Christ. We all need to stop trying to be good, and start trying to be like God. We need to do things, first and foremost to please God, second to emulate God so that others here on earth may better understand the good news, and third to try and please others. The old way of trying to up-hold the law is dead. It no longer makes us Holy in God's eyes. Its is, I believe, an act of narcissism. When we try to live our life according to the law, we only do it to make ourselves look better. However when we try to live for God, then, and only then are we fully focused on others. We, as imperfect humans, can do nothing other than believe and trust in Christ to save oursleves.
Now I am not saying we should go around sinning, for we still need to hold ourselves to a standard, but that standard is trying to emulate Christ in all that we do, no easy task no doubt. Luckily for us Christ has died for us because He knew that we could never be fully like Him. Is it going to be easy to make this change, from an act of narcissism to an act of the utmost altruism.
So are you willing to try and change your thinking, willing to stop doing things for you, and start doing things for others? I think some are, and there are some out there who have. But for those out there who haven't take a week and see if you can do it.
Best of luck to all
Good luck Phillies
